Arthur Frohman Obituary

Frohman, Arthur H. age 97. Beloved husband of 65 years to Cecelia (Springer); loving father to Barbara (Steve) Gold and Daniel (Carole Shifman) Frohman; adoring grandfather to Josh and Noah Gold; loving brother of Lillian Schiff (the late Joseph), Elaine Krumbein (Eliezer) and the late David Frohman (the late Vola); devoted uncle to many nieces and nephews. Arthur was a proud member of the ROTC program at Chicago's Austin High School, achieving the rank of Major and winning first place in the program's Best Soldier of the Year competition in 1931. He also attended the Citizens' Military Training Camp at Fort Sheridan in the summer of 1930. Arthur earned a 4.0 average during his senior year at Austin High, was Managing Editor of the weekly school newspaper and was a hurdler on the track team. Arthur attended college briefly and then joined his father and brother in a food brokerage company the family founded after his father's coffee and tea importing and roasting business closed in the Depression. Called to active duty from the U.S. Army Reserve in WWII, he served as 1st Sergeant in Company I, Third Battalion, 58th Infantry in the Aleutian Islands. As president of L.H. Frohman & Sons from 1963 to 1984 and of Frohman International from 1968 until retirement at the age of 93, Arthur was a leader in the seafood industry. He traveled regularly with his wife Cecelia to Northern Europe, the South Pacific and all across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Along the way he made many deep and lasting friendships. Many of his Australian friends would comment that he had seen far more of their country than they had. He was proud to have served as President of the National Fisheries Institute, the Chicago Foodservice Marketing Club and the Illinois Seafood Council. He was also a member of the Secretary of the Interior's American Fisheries Advisory Committee and the Ocean Affairs Advisory Committee of the U.S. State Department. Recognized in 2007 by the City of Highland Park with its "Character Counts Pillar Award," Arthur was a long-time and much acclaimed leader of the Highland Park Senior Center's weekly "News & Views" discussion group.
