Brian Geraghty Obituary
Brian Geraghty probably knew if you preferred bacon strips on your beef tenderloin or not. He might have known what your kids, and their kids, liked to grab for a snack after school. No, Brian wasn't hacking your email. He was doing what he had done for over 35 years, serving the customers of Lakeside Foods with his most personal touch. Like most of us, Brian had his mentors. Lakeside was started in 1958 by Archie Goudreau, who had worked as a butcher at the former National Tea. Gene Smith, one of Archie's most loyal employees, purchased the store in 1977. During Archie and Gene's tenure, the store became a Winnetka institution - famous for its meat, produce and deli departments... as well as its exceptional customer service. Brian began working as a bagger at the age of 15 while attending New Trier High School. He'd work after school and on the weekends and, even while attending Marquette University in Milwaukee, often commuting during the school year to work. It was at Lakeside where he met his future wife, Terri, Gene's wife's youngest sister. Terri worked at the store as a cashier at the time and soon after Brian's arrival, the two became inseparable. They were married on July 13, 1985. Over the years, Brian learned a lot from Gene - both the tactical skills of running a grocery store, but perhaps more importantly, things that made it more than "just" a store... Things like integrity, dedication, honesty, commitment, and treating your customers and employees like family. He could be seen at Lakeside nearly any day of his adult life. When the snow piled into three foot drifts, you could count on seeing his lonely tracks on Elm Street at 4am. His devotion to the store was known to be contagious, as the highest level of service was embraced by his family of employees. This kind of connection cannot be bought or forced. It is only earned through involvement in the lives of those who worked with him. Advice, rides, loans, meals, birthday celebrations┬┐ Brian and Terri truly cared about their Lakeside family. The entire community was blessed by their participation in 4th of July parades and charitable causes of every kind. Locals always knew they would find a friendly face and someone who knew them by name when they came into Lakeside. We can only hope that someone will be able to fill the empty spot in our community left by the loss of Brian and Terri Geraghty. Services have been held.
