Daniel Reynolds Obituary
Daniel S. Reynolds, NIU Professor Emeritus of Law, whose battle with a rare form of leukemia ended on August 18, 2017. A large family of friends and legions of admiring and grateful students mourn his passing. Born in Duluth, MN on August 5, 1946, Dan was the beloved son of Rosina and Floyd Reynolds, the devoted brother of Kevin Reynolds, and the doting housemate of the affectionate felines Wales and Mimi, all of whom predeceased him. Dan's childhood years were spent in Minneapolis and Omaha, where, in his high school years, he particularly enjoyed acting in class plays and singing in musical events. A graduate of the University of Nebraska, for a time he studied for the priesthood at the Pontifical College Josephinum (OH), but left to pursue another degree at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Inducted into the U.S. Army in 1968, he became a member of the Military Police Corps, in which capacity he served at Fort Richardson in Anchorage (AL). Honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1970, to his very last days he remained quietly proud of his military service, and was heard to say on more than one occasion that his years in the service were the best in his life. After earning his J.D. from Creighton University School of Law in 1975 he spent a quixotic year in New York in the pursuit of an acting career. He then returned to his beloved Omaha to begin the practice of law at the prestigious firm of Kutak Rock, where he worked until joining the faculty at the NIU College of Law in 1982. His accomplishments were many, chief among them being, in his view, his long and passionate engagement in the classroom with the professional formation of those who would be lawyers and judges, as well as his work as the assistant reporter to the American Bar Association's "Kutak Commission," which drafted the new code of ethics for American lawyers, The Model Rules of Professional Conduct. With profound expertise in professional ethics and conduct, contracts, business law, and (a passionate late-in-life affair) legal history, he was also for two decades a mainstay of NIU's study abroad program in Agen, France, an experience that he came to view as bringing him a renewed lease on life. It was doubtless there that he adopted the one-word, French conversational gesture that can mean-although the give-and-take has been full of wit, gentle barbs, and sudden but necessary reworkings of our thoughts about each other and of life-it is now time to part company: Voilà. As he requested, a Catholic mass in celebration of his life will be conducted at Christ the Teacher University Parish, 512 Normal Road, DeKalb, IL, on September 9th at 10:30 am, with internment to follow at a later date in the Omaha National Veterans Cemetery. The NIU College of Law will have a special memorial service for Professor Reynolds later this fall semester.
