David H. Stroud Obituary
David H. Stroud, 84, died in Lenox, MA on Aug 5, 2017, of natural causes. Born in 1932 in Manhattan to Anne Elizabeth Jacobs and Charles Edwin Stroud III, Stroud joined the Navy at 17, serving in the Korean Conflict. He earned a BA in journalism from Michigan State in 1958. Stroud joined the National Live Stock & Meat Board in Chicago in 1962, serving as President/CEO from 1968-80. Under his leadership, the Meat Board developed Uniform Retail Meat Identity Standards (URMIS) and published the "Meat Board Meat Book" with an intro by Julia Child. In 1997, he received the American Meat Science Assn Special Recognition Award for his instrumental role in developing URMIS standards. Stroud served on the first White House Conference on Foods, Nutrition and Health ('69), President's Food Price Control Advisory Committee ('73), and White House Economic Summit Conference ('74). In 2001, he moved to his wife's hometown, Lenox, MA. He was on the Board of Community Television Southern Berkshires handling PR ('05-14). Diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2003, Stroud's strong constitution and sense of humor sustained him. He leaves his wife of 35 years, Suzanne W Pelton; six sons: Robert L Stroud (Kalamazoo, MI) Michael B Stroud (Hood River, OR), Jeffrey T Stroud (McHenry, IL) David D Stroud (Durango CO), Joshua F Pelton-Stroud (Albany, NY) and Scott G Pelton-Stroud (Boston, MA); a step-son, August W Danowski (Lenox, MA); and ten grandchildren. His sister, Carlyn Burnham Stroud Larson, pre-deceased him in 1978. A memorial service will be held in Vicksburg, MI in May 2018. More at facebook.com/David.H.Stroud
