Francis Akos Obituary

Former assistant concertmaster and member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 48 years, Francis Akos died peacefully on January 28, 2016, at the age of 93 in Minneapolis. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he received his artist's and teacher's diplomas from the Franz Liszt Academy. After surviving the Holocaust, he held concertmaster positions with the Hungarian Royal Opera and Philharmonic, the Gothenburg Symphony, and the Stadtische Oper. Akos was a member of the Minneapolis Symphony under music director Antal Dorati, before joining the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1956. He was appointed Assistant Concertmaster by music director Fritz Reiner in 1959. He served as founding music director of the Highland Park Strings for 28 years. Akos is survived by two daughters, Kate Akos (and her husband Harry Jacobs), and Judy Akos Berkowitz (and her husband Dennis Berkowitz), and beloved grandchildren, Justin and Melissa. The family asks that any gifts of remembrance be made to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Highland Park Strings, or the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

My mother and I will miss seeing Francis at Jones-Harrison, where he was always ready with a sweet smile and kind words. Such a lovely gentleman. Being from Chicago ourselves and my mother and father having frequented the Symphony Orchestra during his tenure, we found it interesting to cross his path in Minneapolis. Our condolences to his family.

I studied with Mr. Akos while I was in the Civic Orchestra for a period of time. He was a great teacher and violinist. I was very fortunate to have had an opportunity to study with him.

I am sorry to hear of Francis's passing. My father Frank Crisafulli was a colleague of Francis for many years and I believe rode down to Orchestra Hall with Francis on a number of occasions. Some years after Frank's passing, I remember running into Francis and Mrs. Akos at Le Peep and exchanging nice memories with them. A very lovely couple to say the least.

Sincerely,
Mike Crisafulli

Francis Akos was my cousin. We exchanged letters for several years. He was a kind, gentle man, whose violin could express feelings no words can. His music touched your heart. He had a long rich life. He brought up his daughters with an appreciation of the world of music. I will miss him. May he rest in peace.

I have wonderful memories of sitting at Orchestra Hall, Akos spotting me and giving me a nod of his head and a tap of his bow. He was a lovely man.
