Dr.  Henry B. Matthews Obituary
Loving son of Harry and Emma Gertrude Matthews passed away of natural causes at the age of 106 on September 22, 2017. Henry was born into a family of 4 sisters in Washington DC where he attended Washington public schools and earned his BS degree and medical degree from Howard University. He served a rotating internship at Provident Hospital in Chicago IL, where he met his loving wife Harryetta, a nurse intern. Henry Sr. enlisted in the US Army Medical Corp and served in the C.B.I. Theater in India and Burma where he earned his first Bronze Battle Star, then in the Pacific Theater Saipan where he received the rank of Captain and earned another Bronze Battle Star. While in the war his first son Henry Jr was born. In 1946 He returned to Chicago to his private practice and the birth of his second son Philip. While at Provident Hospital, Henry was Director of Clinics, Senior Attending Physician, Chairman of Division of Allergy, and Director of Medical Affairs. Henry held multiple positions during his many years in Chicago. He was the local surgeon for the A.T. & S.F. Railway system, and a Member of the Board of Directors for the Chicago Heart Association. He was Medical Director of Dan Williams Health Center (HMO), and a member of the Senior Staff at Cook County Hospital Chicago until his retirement. Henry Volunteered for the Executive Service Corp and his favorite, the Chicago Lincoln Park Zoo where he showed his tremendous love of animals until he and his wife relocated to Dallas Texas to be near their son Philip and resided at Presbyterian Village North until his death. Henry lost his loving wife Harryetta after 68 years of marriage in 2007, and at his death leaves behind his two sons Henry Jr. and Philip. There will be a private burial at Burr Oaks near Chicago Illinois next to his wife in the Family plot.
