Karen G. Hillman Obituary
Ms. Karen G. (Farnbacher) Hillman, born on December 13, 1919 in Augsburg, Germany, to the late Frieda Farnbacher and the late Fritz Farnbacher, passed away at age 98 on July 27, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois. Karen graduated from London School of Economics and received a graduate degree in Sociology from Northwestern University. She met her beloved husband, the late Jordan Jay Hillman, after she immigrated to Chicago. Karen was a dedicated participant in many social causes. She was an active contributor to the international student program at Northwestern and both attended and taught courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She volunteered her time to the League of Women Voters and served on numerous boards involved with mental health and social services. Karen applied her sociology training to conduct research aimed toward developing fair housing programs. As a child Karen experienced anti-Semitism in many forms. After Kristallnacht she fled to London and empowered herself by working hard despite the unbearable trauma of losing her family in the Holocaust. Her work ethic, aimed at increasing social consciousness, was one of the defining characteristics of her life. Her curious mind never stopped searching out new ways to learn and new topics to explore. Along the way she nurtured connections to her extended family and developed many meaningful friendships. She also loved cats, cooking, reading, gardening, and travel. A private memorial gathering is planned.
