Nancy Elizabeth Remley-Whiteley

Nancy Elizabeth Remley-Whiteley, a psychotherapist and educator, died on 2 February 2013 in Evanston after a long illness. She was 62. Dr. Remley-Whiteley was in private practice for all of her career, and also designed, developed, and ran a behavioral science course for medical residents who specialized in family medicine. In this role, she was in the forefront of a profound change in medical training that recognized the health and emotional impact of life events and illness on the individual and the family. She also taught human development and psychological services in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University for almost ten years, receiving an Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006. Born 18 February 1950 in Anamosa, Iowa, Dr. Remley-Whiteley was the daughter of Howard Marshall Remley and Betty Jane Levsen Remley. She graduated from Chatham Hall in Virginia in 1968 and from Beloit College, where she majored in English, in 1972. After teaching in Ramsgate, Kent (UK) for a year she enrolled in the graduate program in Counseling Psychology at Northwestern University. She earned a doctorate in 1979 with a dissertation on the attitudes of women medical students to professional and sex roles. An ardent horsewoman, Dr. Remley-Whiteley loved music, nature, gardening, golden retrievers, good chocolate, and spending time in Michigan. Most of all, she loved her family and friends. Dr. Remley-Whiteley is survived by her husband of 32 years, Dr. Harry Whiteley, her two sons, Daniel and Adam, her mother, three stepchildren, Michael, Miriam, and Anita, two stepgrandchildren Noah and Simone, her brother David (Betsy) Remley, and sister Jane (James) Rasley, and their families. She was a deeply beloved and cherished wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher and friend. There will be a Memorial celebration on Sunday, February 24th, at 2 pm. It will be at the Alice Millar Chapel in Evanston. The Chapel is located at 1870 Sheridan Rd. at the junction of Sheridan and Chicago Ave. There is public parking one block south of the Chapel at Grant St. and Chicago Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to Michael J.
