Paul Obis Obituary

Paul Luty Obis, Jr., 66, died Monday, June 25, 2018. Paul, was a "provider and a force" for humanity. Paul was the founder of #VegetarianTimes magazine and he was one of the most forward thinking, creative and intellectually energetic people. He was brilliant, eccentric, a sweet gentle soul and a humanitarian. He was preceded in death by his wife Mariclaire Barret. He passes on his legacy "of making the world a better place" through his six sons: Nick (Jess), Quentin (Maryam), Paul W., Kevin (Beth), Timothy (Anastasia) and Gregory. He is also survived by his wife Janeen Obis. An interactive website will be developed as a memorial. Please no flowers - but rather donate to the National Vegetarian Museum or write a memory for his family.

Paul and I were friends since our high school days and we had many adventures (i.e. Captain Lizard's First Annual Karma Concert and Blue Horizons)together. We didn't always see eye-to-eye politically (one of his favorite subjects) but we never argued, only discussed. He was a sweet guy and a good friend, even though it became hard to keep in touch we would try to get together for catch-up dinners and to see what was going on in each others lives. Sorry to see the world without you Paul. We shall meet again.

My husband, Paul Obis started Vegetarian Times Magazine in the early 70's. He died in June of this year. I wrote a virtual interactive memorial for him and legacy - it was made live yesterday. www.paulobis.com. I thought you might be interested.

Paul and I were friends in nursing school. I remember his launch of the original VT when we were students. It all started on his mimeographed newsletter. Freethinker. Innovator. Heck of a nice guy. My brother also passed away from complications of Lewey Body Dementia. May Paul s memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

The Obises were our next-door neighbors in Melrose Park for 18 years. Pauly was funny and respectful and had a kindness about him. Pauly and my sister were the same age. I was several years younger but was smitten. When he hit his teens, I thought he was beautiful. I loved his wavy red hair, his horn-rimmed glasses, his black turtleneck and slacks and his quiet aura. I would sit on the swing in the backyard and swoon when I saw him. He was pretty darn cool and that seems to be how he was throughout his life. Pretty darn cool. Pauly and his family are part of my childhood memories and that's a good thing. I send my deepest condolences. Loss of a loved one is hard to endure but how special that you had him.

I'm a very old friend of Paul from IMMC School of nursing. I taught Paul how to drive a car with a manual transmission and he taught me how to parallel park. We once drove from the Grand Canyon in Az to Illinois NON STOP. What an experience.

Paul could strike up a conversation and make friends with anyone, anywhere. A very special person who will be deeply missed.

I have such fond memories...of hanging out in the Oak Park house with Paul, Claire and all the boys...Claire was my midwife for my home birth... with Nick in her arms! Amazing people. Paul's direct gentleness, his inquisitiveness and sincerity..were always present.. Blessings Paul and thanks for all the inspiration! (and recipes!) You were way ahead of your time... Blessings and love to the boys...Judylynn Schmidt aka Judy G.
