Quentin Young Obituary

Dr. Quentin Young was always drawn to the struggle for social justice. He was affiliated with many prominent Chicago institutions and had a practice in Hyde Park, but it was Cook County Hospital-where he trained and worked-that was closest to his heart. Always an activist, Quentin provided care for Freedom Summer volunteers in Mississippi and those hurt during the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention protests. His activism resulted in being called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Quentin was the local physician to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and marched at his side; treated the Chicago Eight, the Beatles, Studs Terkel, Mayor Harold Washington, and many of Chicago's most famous residents. He is survived by his children Nancy, Polly, Barbara, Ethan, and Michael as well as his grandchildren. Quentin's legacy as an activist, teacher, mentor, and leader on behalf of health equity and a national single-payer health system continues. He will be deeply missed. Information about memorial services will be available soon at www.hmprg.org. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Health & Medicine Policy Research Group which he founded (www.hmprg.org) or Physicians for a National Health Program where he was National Coordinator (www.pnhp.org).

Dr. Young was my stepfather's friend and doctor for over 30 years. He became my doctor for 9 years before he retired. R.I.P. my friend and friend to all, you will be missed.

Dr. Young was my doctor and one of my heroes. I will always remember him saying "Everybody in, nobody out." I admired him on many levels and am saddened by his passing. He will long be remembered.
