Sharon Feeney Obituary
Adieu Sweet Sharon - how blessed we have been to be your sisters, nieces and nephews. Back when Sharon Kay Feeney was born (April 28, 1956), sending severely developmentally disabled children to the Illinois State Hospital in Dixon IL was common. But her life in Oak Park and Elmhurst was a testimony to a world that gradually opened its arms to the disabled and to the untiring work of people like our parents - Marge and John Feeney - who served as advocates for the disabled and made the changes happen. We were privileged to grow up in their house where physical and developmental disabilities weren't hidden from the world but lived a day to day life in the community. We witnessed the sacrifices our parents made to keep Sharon at home during the first 19 years of her life and their commitment to training programs and housing for developmentally disabled adults. What a gift we were given. Our parents are deceased (along with our brothers Johnny Joe and Dan), we now know she is with them. We are Maureen Schleyer, Kathleen Newport (Tim), Mary Ann Feeney, Colleen Feeney, Terri Evon (Mike), Chris Feeney and Carol Feeney-Holland (Adam). Sharon was loved by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and caretakers. A private memorial service will be held at later date.
