Shirlee Rubenstein Obituary
Shirlee Rubenstein, long-time Evanston resident, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday at the age of 92. She is survived by her six children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Shirlee worked as a social worker at Jewish Family Services for over 20 years. Her concern for the well-being of others and her commitment to standing by those in need was a guiding force in her life. She canvassed for the democratic party, helped launch the Peace Center in Evanston, and was active in local politics, particularly in the area of civil rights. She was passionate about music, and hosted many classical concerts in her home. An irrepressible lover of life, she traveled all over the world. She embodied the spirit of living life to the fullest, taking a stand when it mattered, and being truthful to oneself above all else. Family and friends will gather informally at the home of Mark Rubenstein, 917 Maple Ave in Evanston on Sunday from 12 to 3 PM to share our memories of mom, and try our best to live as fully as she did.
