Albert B. Gerbie, M.D., of Highland Park, formerly of Northfield; distinguished educator, clinician, researcher and editor, who was affiliated with Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1952. Gave over four decades of uncompromising service to Northwestern. During his tenure, he treated over 12,000 women patients and delivered over 3,000 babies into this world. Dr. Gerbie pioneered research in prenatal genetic diagnosis, making amniocentesis an invaluable tool. He published over 100 scholarly articles in his field. In 1970, he co-wrote an article on amniocentesis in the New England Journal of Medicine, which was elected as one of the top 100 scholarly articles, in pediatric genetics in the last 50 years. Dr. Gerbie, was the past Chairman, President, Director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1975 to 1996. Responsible for Board Certification of specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology in the United States. Beloved husband for 55 years and childhood sweetheart of the late Barbara nee Hirsch, who preceded him in death 26 hours earlier; loving father of Gail, Ralph and Jody Gerbie; adored grandfather of Heather Oberly, David, Danielle and Kevin Gerbie; cherished brother and partner of Dr. Melvin (Patti) Gerbie; treasured uncle and respected friend of many. Service Wednesday, 1:00 pm at Lakeside Congregation, 1221 County Line Road, Highland Park, IL. Interment Shalom Memorial Park. For over 50 years "Dr. Al" practiced the sport of ice dancing. He was active in the governance of the Skokie Valley Skating Club. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Northwestern University, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 251 E.
