David Kotker Obituary

David J. Kotker II, 1961-2005. David died after a long illness in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He graduated from Bellevue High School, where he was a champion debator on both the state and national levels. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, where he majored in art, and his sculpture has been exhibited in shows and galleries throughout the Midwest, as well as in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. His work as a tattooist in Chicago and Amsterdam earned him an international reputation in this field. He is survived by his parents, Joan and David Kotker of Bellevue, WA; his brother, Joseph Kotker of Seattle; his son, Ezekial de Jong Kotker of Bellingham, WA and his daughter, Oxeia Kotker, of Amsterdam. David had a deep love of art, film, design, literature and the theatre, and he shared this love with his many friends throughout the world. He thoroughly enjoyed his life, and he was adamant that he would live it in the very same way if he had it to do again. A man can die but once; we owe God a death, and let it go which way it will, he that dies this year is quit for the next. (Shakespeare, Henry IV).

Dear Bougie xoxo Im so very glad and deeply honored to have known you, I have so many great memories of our times spent working at nohopenofear(chicago). To me you were like the very cool big brother or 2nd dad i never had. i see you having been like a bridge to many people, helping so many see the many good and beautiful things of this world. Thank you for living, for all the countless things you taught me, your patience and guidance, and helping me to look around and identify art and beauty where i hadnt seen them before. My hearts' wishes are that you are content and beyond harm in the Buddaland, and that All of your family and friends may be comforted at the loss of your passing over.

Peace

Untill we meet again

My dearest David

Many years past by us and many words were left unspoken. As the tears travel down my face i will always remember the breathtaking moments in our lives together. Our marriage in Russia, the birth of our beautiful daughter, our adventures in far away lands. I will remember the love we had once shared, the kind of love that did not involve words, it was for most unreachable, and for this, it was pure love. Oxiea left you a kiss , for with this kiss, she will bring you with her throughout her life. Thank you for the gift of our beautiful daughter. I hope you found your peace. I love you.

dear david, you were one of the first friends i met when i moved to chicago. when you gave your attention and care to someone, it made an imprint for life. though we hadn't been in touch for years, i thought of you from time to time with wishes for your happiness. the last time i saw you, with your beautiful daughter, you were so happy and that is what i will remember, seeing you in your joy. the vessel could only hold you for so long, special soul, may G-D give you peace.

Dearest David,

You are now at peace with God and your friends and relatives who are also with God and you at this moment. I will remember our family bike ride in Amsterdam and the big carnival swing that we watched go in circles. And, in thinking of circles, you will always be with us, and perhaps be a part of our next life on the planet. Many kisses and lots of all of our love go to you our dear friend and creator. Your dear friends, Freedom, Jesse and VIoleta

Dear David, we have been thinking about you so much, both before and after your death. I only wish you knew/hope that you do.

Full fathom five thy father lies;

Of his bones are coral made;

Those are pearls that were his eyes:

Nothing of him that doth fade

But doth suffer a sea-change

Into something rich and strange.

Lots of love from Deborah

I met David in 1983. My wife and david worked together at a day care center in Hyde Park.

"You should meet this guy I work with," Caryn told me.

We became close friends right away. Before long david and Ruth moved across the street from us in Pilsen. I was painting and working as an architect at the time, and david was making these giant, plaster statues, which were quite powerful, but the material undercut the strength of the work for me. So I started to suggest to david that he work in bronze, which he did. A couple of years later david directed Peter Miller to look at my work, which led to me showing in that gallery, which profoundly changed the course of my life in every way possible. Through david I met a ton of interesting people in the Chicago art world. Thanks, buddy.

David - you were always so warm, gentle and creative. You had a soothing presence, and I have some great memories of being with you in your tattoo shop, either having you work on me, or friends. Thanks for the wonderful work you did. You will be missed. You touched a lot of peoples lives. Sweet Peace to you...

I owe alot to David. If it wasnt for him,my life would be drastically different. He gave me a chance and believed in me when no one else was willing to help. I feel blessed to have had him in my life.
