Ruth H. Frick Obituary
Ruth H. Frick, 86, of Lancaster, PA, and formerly Elmhurst, Illinois, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at The Glen of Willow Valley Retirement Communities. Born in Findlay, Ohio, she was the daughter of the Rev. Ray M. Hudson and Ethel Leidigh Hudson. She graduated from Iowa City (IA) High School in 1946 and Findlay College, Findlay, Ohio in 1950. Married on July 16, 1950, Ruth was the loving wife of Ivan E. Frick for more than 64 years. She served as First Lady of Findlay College from 1964 to 1971 and of Elmhurst College from 1971 to 1995. In receiving the Founder's Medal from Elmhurst in 1992, Ruth was recognized for her "untold hours" spent on behalf of the College that made her "a full partner in her husband's presidency of accomplishments." That same year, the University of Findlay presented her with its Distinguished Alumni Award. A member of both Elmhurst College Association and the Elmhurst College Women's Auxiliary, she founded Elmhurst: College and Community, an organization dedicated to building a dynamic relationship between the college and its town. At the time she and her husband retired, Elmhurst College honored them for their service by renaming the campus's student union building as the Frick Center. An elementary and high school teacher during the earliest phase of her career, Ruth, in later life, held a position with the Board of Illinois Literacy, Inc. and was a tutor with the Laubach Literacy Program. She also was a long-time member of American Association of University Women and the Elmhurst Symphony Auxiliary. Ruth was a member of the College First Church of God in Findlay; St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Elmhurst; First Congregational Church of Western Springs, Western Springs, IL; and Hamilton Park United Church of Christ, Lancaster, PA. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her children David (Ingrid Plajzer) of Kensington, CA, Daniel (Tamara Goeglein) of Lancaster, PA, and Susan (Ronald Searl) of Westmont, IL, and her five granddaughters, Rachel Foster, Sarah Foster, Eleanor Frick, Evelyn Frick and Lillie Frick. Also surviving are her brother, James Hudson (Hazel Martin) of Cedar Rapids, IA, and her sister-in-law Mary Hudson of Casey, IL, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents and her brother Raymond Hudson. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, 125 West Church Street, Elmhurst on Saturday, May 2 at 11:00 am.
