Audrey Spiegel Obituary
Audrey M. Spiegel, age 83, of Northfield, IL, and Aspen, CO. Born and raised in Evanston, IL, she attended Northwestern University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Her friendship will always be treasured, and we already miss her and her infectious laugh and beautiful smile. She was generous and glamorous, a radiant personality with a wonderful sense of humor. That laugh was her trademark. Audrey was stylishly self-possessed and plainspoken. An exuberant and unmistakable chortle, it was audible from astonishing distances, and once heard, was not forgotten, just like her signature sign-off, "Thanks a Million." The Spiegels were involved in numerous Chicago and Aspen civic and arts organizations, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Merit School of Music, The Chicago Lighthouse, Chicago Botanical Gardens, The Night Ministry, Northwestern University, and many others. Her magnanimity extended to animals, dogs in particular. She cherished her three Chihuahuas, Pepe, Lily Sue, and Cindy Sue. Generous as well in their spirited entertaining of friends, the Spiegels hosted famously creative and occasionally lavish parties. Her houses were always warm and comfortable and beautifully designed for entertaining. A brass plate is on the front door of their Aspen home with the Latin inscription, "Si Non Oscillas, Noli Tintinnare" ("If you don't swing, don't ring"). Later in life, they decided it was time to travel and see the world. They went on dozens of fabulous trips with friends and the CSO, visiting six continents and the world's greatest destinations. Beloved wife of the late Edward "Ted" Spiegel; loving mother of the late Lynn Spiegel; also survived by a sister-in-law, cousins, nephews, and several close friends. The Spiegels also counted as family, Sean Susanin, who for 30 years faithfully took care of the Chihuahuas and lived with Audrey and her caregiver, Delia Yuen, after Ted's passing. The three of them became a family. Audrey and Delia were the best of friends, forming a mother - daughter bond so unique and special. Memorial Gathering, Saturday, November 12, 2016, at 2 p.m., at Lakeshore Country Club, 1255 Sheridan Rd., Glencoe, IL, 60022. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Spiegel Research Center, Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, 1845 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL, 60208 or to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Attn: Development Office, 220 S. Michigan Av., Chicago, IL, 60604. Funeral info: 847.673.6111 or www.habenfuneral.com.
