Gail Mahoney Obituary

Published by Legacy.com on Oct. 2, 2000.
Gail was born on June 27, 1948, at Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, Illinois. Her full name at birth was Gail Madelyn Christensen. She resided in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, with her parents, Mabel and Arne, and older brother, John.

The schools Gail attended were Forest Glen Elementary, Churchill Junior High, Glenbard West High School, and Iowa State University. Gail earned her teaching certificate and worked over the years as a substitute teacher.

While at Iowa State, she met a guy named Mel, who had a car and an apartment, which made her mother VERY nervous! Gail and Mel were married the following year and later moved to Indianapolis.

Gail soon gave birth to their son, Jeff. Jeff gave them many wonderful times, and also kept them on their toes. Jeff was a very active little boy and often hurt himself to the point of needing stitches. It was for this reason that they waited five years before having their daughter, Amy. Gail chose the name Amy because she had always dreamed of giving that name to her daughter.

While Gail was pregnant with Amy, she and Mel built a house and moved to Lombard, Illinois. Mel and Gail divorced a few years later, and Gail remained in their Lombard home with their young children.

Gail was a devoted mother and, even as a single mother for many years, spent a great deal of time with Jeff and Amy. When the children were young, Gail always was at home when they returned from school. She was the leader of Amy’s Girl Scout troop for many years, attended all of Amy’s and Jeff’s sports practices and games, and constantly flooded them with love and affection.

She loved to take walks with her children and hear them tell her stories of their day. She also loved to sit on the porch, watch the sun set, and sing songs with them. At night, she would always tuck in Jeff and Amy, taking time to read to them or give them a back rub. During Amy’s high school years, when most of Amy’s friends weren’t getting along with their mothers, Amy told people her mother was her best friend.

Gail had many talents, including playing the piano, sewing, drawing, and handicrafts. She made doll clothes and sewed clothes for Amy, made macramé, and knitted. Amy still has a Cabbage Patch-type doll Gail made for her by hand.

Gail fell in love and married a wonderful man, Robert Mahoney, who was Jeff’s baseball coach. They were married almost 19 years. Together, they had many wonderful times and went on many vacations. They traveled to Hawaii, Australia and, Gail’s favorite destination, Florida. She enjoyed being anywhere near the ocean, and she and Robert went on several cruises.

Gail was able to see both Jeff and Amy get married. However, she passed away before her first granddaughter, Peyton, was born. Peyton was born exactly seven months to the day after Gail’s death and is, therefore, called the “Little Angel” of the family.

She passed away at age 50 in Boynton Beach, Florida, on June 12, 1999. Gail’s immediate family included her husband, Robert Mahoney; her son, Jeff (Aimee) Schabilion; her daughter, Amy (Frank) Nitsche; her granddaughter, Peyton Schabilion; her mother Mabel Christensen; her brother, John Christensen; and her aunt and uncle, Bruce and Polly Craig.

Gail will be remembered for her warm, friendly, open personality. She was loved very much by all her family and friends, and her memory will live on forever in all of them.

I knew Gail as a child, we were very good friends in Glen Ellyn. Her mother was our Girl Scout leader. I had many wonderful times with her. I am very saddened to learn that she has passed. I am certain she would be very happy to know her family thinks of her and includes her in their memories. She was a beautiful, gentle girl and I know she was a loving mother. i want to thank her family for keeping this memorial for her.

Mom,

You have two new Grandchildren. I am FINALLY a Mommy!!! I now understand the depth of your love for Jeff and I and know how proud you were to be a mom. Madelyn Abigail was named after you, and I only hope she can grow up with the kindness and love you had for everyone. Ethan is the first grandson on either side and he is such a Schabilion boy! Frank and I are so blessed to have them. I only wish I had you here to hold them and be a part of their lives. Frank and I will be sure to fill them with stories of what a wonderful person you were. You are their guardian angel.

Love always,

Amy

It has been at least 20 years since I last saw Gail. As a friend of Amy's, she always made me feel welcome in her home. Some of my best memories as a kid include time spent at the pool and the trip to Florida. I appreciated the hot chocolate after Ice skating and the help sewing a roller skate so that I could participate in the Girl Scout trip to the roller rink. I will remember your laughter and your kindness. Thank You.

Mom,

I wanted to say how much I miss you. I am about to become a mommy to two beautiful babies and miss you more then ever. It has been hard going through this pregnancy without your love and support. I see other people with their moms and it makes me sad that I don't have you here with me. I hope to give my children the unconditional love and support that you gave to Jeff and I growing up. You will be a part of them through the hugs and kisses I give to them every day. My babies are not even born yet and I know the kind of love you had for Jeff and I. My children will grow knowing who you were and the kind of heart you had.

You are going to be the grandmother of four! Peyton and Sydney are growing up so fast and are such beautiful little girls. Soon you will have another granddaughter and also a grandson. I know you are an angel looking down on us and protecting us. I look forward to seeing their little faces and knowing they are also a part of you. I love you.

My Dearest Gail,

I miss our phone calls, our letters and I miss most of all your infectious giggle. I miss the opportunity of discussing our grandchildren together.

When I think of you, which is often, my heart still aches. I still shake my head in disbelief that you are truly gone.

As Becky said in your eulogy, "Gail was the first to do everything." So, Heaven also got you first. Lucky, lucky Heaven.

Keep notes my dear friend. We'll have a lot to catch up on when I see you again.

You're always in my heart.

Love,

Sharon

Mom,

I miss you very much and think of
you often. I have so many
wonderful memories, but the one
that is most lasting is how excited
you were when I told you that you
were going to be a grandmother.
I'm sure that you are watching over
her, but I just wanted you to know
that Peyton Lena is a beautiful
little girl. She is almost 9-
months old and is VERY mobile. She
gets into everything!!! She often
reminds me of the stories that you
used to tell me about my
childhood. Now, I have a much
better understanding what you went
through. :)

Love, Jeff

Gail

We knew you only for a short while,
but our lasting memory is of a
smiling, cheerful woman who gave us
warm hugs each time we met. Amy
gives those same wonderful hugs and
each day we cherish that she is
part of our family.

Gail loved to laugh...and we
laughed a lot together over the
years. We could laugh over the
silliest things!! She just loved
happiness. Gail and I wrote a lot
of letters back and forth...oh, how
I loved her letters.

Gail taught me how to hug. She was
constantly hugging me. She was a
very happy person.

We miss her very much.

We only knew Gail for a short time
but quickly learned she was a very
proud mother who loved her
children . She wrote us often
making sure that she was doing all
she could for Amy's shower and the
wedding, she was very excited and
sincerely welcomed us into the
family. We thank you, Gail for the
lovely daughter you share with us;
we promise to love her and support
her as I know you want us to.You
touched our lives and we will never
forget you - you certainly do live
on in your children.

My mother was one of the most
wonderful people I have ever
known. I think of her everyday and
miss her very much. Her smile and
laughter will forever be in my
heart. I just wish she died
knowing just how important she was
to me and how much I loved her. I
couldn't have had a better mother
then her.

I love you, Mom!!!
