Alex Strauss of Chico passed away on Monday, Oct. 11, at age 17.

Alex was born in Carmichael, Calif., and raised in Applegate, Calif. He and his family moved to Chico in 2005. Alex was a senior at Pleasant Valley High School. Alex recognized his need for a Savior during a gospel series in February 2002 and was saved just before his 9th birthday through Romans 5:8-9 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him."

Alex was known as a diligent student both at high school as well as at the Chico Gospel Hall, where both he and his family gathered with local Christians. Alex had plans for college next year, a job as a math tutor, and vacation travel with his family. They traveled as a family all over the western U.S. and especially enjoyed the national parks; Yellowstone was Alex's favorite. Alex and his dad always had various projects going on. They were regularly seen around town on their Friday evening outings, a habit they started when Alex was 18 months old.

Alex is survived by his parents, Dan and Joan Strauss, an older brother Andrew, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Alex's passing is keenly felt by those who loved him. He will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Alex's parents, Dan and Joan, are grateful to the Chico Gospel Hall members, Alex's fellow students, and other friends for their gracious expressions of love and support during this very difficult time.

Alex is absent from the body and present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8. His family mourns their great loss and longs for that great reunion in heaven.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." Revelation 21:4

I first met the two you at your son's service on October 16 at the Calvary Chapel. Here it is November and I'm finally writing to you. My son's name is also Alex. So, the service for your Alex was especially moving and meaningful to me. I believe it was Alec Hoath who gave the beautiful eulogy. He spoke of being accepted and also feeling acceptance, so important to everyone. Thank you for your courage and love of Alex's friends to share his story.
God's peace be with you.

Alex was in my honors trig class my junior year and his sophomore year. He was by far one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. Not only was I always impressed by his brilliance, but his constant kindness always amazed me. He could always make everyone laugh. Alex is greatly missed by many including myself. Your family has been in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this tragic time.

I've gone to school with Alex throughout all our high school years. We shared classes and worked together on a few projects. He was a very smart boy and had a great sense of humor. My heart goes out to you in this time of grieving. May God be with you and support your healing.

I did not know Alex, I saw him at school just walking by every now and again, he seemed like a nice person. Although I didn't know him, this loss is affecting me in ways I would never imagine. I would just like to say that I wish I had got to know him. I truly do.

I am very saddened by the terrible loss your family is going through! As one friend told me "lots of people are dancing but I can't hear the music"...we just can"t ever really know the pain others are trying to deal with and smile through. Leaves everyone wondering what they could have done to make a difference. God be with your family and may he comfort you and grant you peace. Claudette Ritter

To the Strauss Family, I have never met you, but have been touched by the sudden loss of your amazing son. No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. My deepest sympathy is with you as you grieve. I pray that you will find comfort in the peace that only God can provide, peace that passes all understanding. I pray this peace and comfort will give you the opportunity to celebrate the moments you all shared together with Alex, the memories you have of your remarkable son.

Alex was a beautiful person with limitless opportunity. I am in shock at this news. I worked closely with him in community service projects last year and have fond memories of his drive to succeed and undeniable intelligence. I talked with him about graduation and college plans a week ago. I still struggle to believe that this could happen. I will always remember Alex with the utmost respect. I give my deepest sympathy to the Strauss Family. I pray God will bless you and provide comfort and support to you during this difficult time.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Alex, but I have worked with Dan for many years. Dan has always spoken very proudly of his family and it was clear that their bond is strong. May that bond get them through this tough time and may they know that the thoughts and feelings of those that know them are with them now.

It saddens me greatly to hear of your loss. In light of the many suicides our nation has seen in recent weeks, experiencing a loss so close to home increase our grief and encourages us to do all we can to help our local young people. I am a local minister and I am committing myself to do all I can to make myself available to any young person to help stop this trend. I would love to meet you to encourage you and pray with you.
