Carl Walter Berner Jr. Obituary
CARL WALTER BERNER, JR. Rev. Carl Walter Berner, Jr., 81, departed this earthly life to be with the Lord on February 21, 2014 after a valiant two-year battle with cancer. Born in Los Angeles, Carl was a third generation Lutheran minister in California. After graduating from Washington High where he was chosen for the Los Angeles All-City Football Team, he completed undergraduate work at Concordia College, Oakland and St John's College, Kansas where he met the girl of his dreams, Marilyn Gerhardt. Carl and Marilyn married just before he completed his graduate degree in theology from Concordia Lutheran Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. He was ordained in Christian ministry in 1958. Returning to California, Carl served as co-minister, alongside his father, of Faith Morningside Lutheran Church, Inglewood and Faith Broadway Church, Los Angeles; minister of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Los Gatos and minister of St Mark's Lutheran Church, Anaheim where he served for 27 years. Upon retirement, Carl moved to Magalia but continued to serve the Lord as visiting and interim minister at churches in Paradise, Brownsville, Chico, Willows and Artois. He concluded his formal ministry at First Congregational Church in Oroville, stepping down only when ill health demanded. During his 54 years of Christian ministry Pastor Carl frequently expressed how blessed and thankful he was to share the Gospel message of Jesus Christ with many people. Carl liked all sports and was an avid football fan (especially USC), determined golfer, great lover of music, singing, fun and laughter. Carl will be greatly missed by Marilyn, his beloved wife of 57 years; daughters Susan and Rebecca Berner and sons-in-law Jim Dugue and Steve Pettersen; brother Robert Berner and his wife Peggy; Gwen Berner (wife of his late brother James), as well as dear nieces, nephews, cousins, cherished friends and parishioners. A celebration of his life and ministry will be held at 11 a.m. on March 22 at Craig Memorial Congregational Church, 5665 Scottwood Road, Paradise. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Paradise Hospice House, 1289 Bille Road, Paradise, CA 95969.
