1925 - 2010 Obituary Condolences

A Graveside service for, Clarence "Mike" VanAtta, 84 of Oroville, will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery on Lincoln Blvd. in Oroville. Mike passed away on Friday, July 16th at Enloe Medical Center, after a brave fight with cancer. Mike was born on November 11, 1925 to Irma and Clarence VanAtta in Richwood, WV. At a young age he moved to Williamsport, PA, and while going to high school he met his wife, Genevieve. Mike joined the Navy in 1942 and served in WWII and the Korean War, retiring in 1973 after 30 years; 20 active and 10 in the reserves as Chief Gunners Mate. After retirement, he moved to Concord, CA where he went to work for U.S. Steel and later for Gilro Machine and Stamping Company; retiring in 1976. He then moved to Oroville, CA, where he resided until his death. In 1994 he joined the Masonic Lodge in Oroville and Forbestown; he was Past Master, 32nd Degree and Shriner in Scottish Rite. Mike's favorite pastimes were working on his trains and gambling at the Casino with Ruth.

Mike is survived by his three daughters, Suzanne (Walt) Richards of Chico, CA, Annette Findling of Anabelle, MO and Carol Haughin of Tracy, CA; three sons, Daniel (Gesinee) of Clayton, CA, James (Sheri) of Somerset, CA and Clarence III (Kathy) VanAtta of Tracy, CA; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
