Colleen McNeilly Obituary
COLLEEN MCNEILLY Colleen McNeilly passed away on February 17, 2018, in Chico. She was 90. She was born to Robert and Roma McNeilly in Ventura on January 9, 1928. Colleen and her sister Bobbie grew up in Coalinga, CA, where their father worked in the oil fields. She excelled in academics and in all things athletic during her years in the public schools there. Colleen received her college degree and teaching credential at Fresno State and a Master's degree from Pepperdine University. She began her long career as an elementary school teacher in Fresno, and then taught for a year in Whittier before accepting a teaching position in Kaiserslautern, West Germany, in 1958, educating the children of U.S. Army personnel. During her year in Germany, Colleen and fellow teachers caravanned far and wide together on their weekends, exploring Germany and neighboring countries including France, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, Colleen in her shiny Triumph roadster. On her return to California, Colleen accepted a teaching position with the Manhattan Beach public school system where she taught for the next 27 years. Most of us have enjoyed the good fortune of having had at least one teacher whose class we eagerly anticipated each day, whose joy in teaching and dedication to her students were infectious. The memory of that teacher lingers well into adulthood. Judging by the numerous students who maintained contact with her long after they moved on from elementary school, Colleen was such a teacher. So it was in Colleen's relationship with her two nephews, on whom she showered long distance gifts of peculiar looking toys from Germany during her time there and of whom she was supportive and attentive her entire life. In 1985, Colleen moved to Kelly Ridge on the shores of Lake Oroville, to be near her sister and brother-in-law who had retired there a few years earlier. There she engaged in fishing, boating, and tennis, and especially golf, which she had pursued through the years, winning tournaments at the local Kelly Ridge golf course. In recent years, Colleen lived in an active senior community, Sycamore Glen, in Chico, in an apartment next door to her sister. After moving there, she added new friendships to those she enjoyed from Kelly Ridge. Colleen is survived by her sister, Bobbie Jahr of Chico, her nephew, Steven Jahr (Karen) of Redding, and her nephew, Craig Jahr (Gretchen) of Portland, Oregon. Colleen's family expresses its gratitude to the fine health care community in Chico that treated Colleen with the care and dignity which surely were her due. Memorial contributions may be made to the and the , both of which Colleen supported.
