DAVID NELSON

David Nelson, resident of Paradise, died at home on December 13, 2007. He was 83 years old.

Born December 16, 1923 in Santa Cruz County, California, he served in the 5th Army Ranger Battalion during the D-Day invasion and the occupation of Europe, and was awarded the Bronze Star. After World War II he served in the Army Reserves until 1959. Graduate of San Jose State College; long-time employee of the California State Department of Fish and Game, from which he retired as an Inspector in 1986. Married in 1945 to Ruth Gibbs Nelson (d. 1978); remarried in 1970 to Gillian Todd Gibbs Nelson. Former volunteer and Board member for Hospice of the Ridge. A dedicated outdoorsman, nature-lover, and supporter of environmental conservation.

He is survived by four daughters from his first marriage: Mary Graham of Richmond, Calif.; Janna Patee of Albany, Calif.; Patricia Nelson of Santa Rosa; and Elizabeth Nelson of San Francisco. Also survived by his second wife, Gillian Nelson of Crescent City, and her two sons, David (Kerry) Gibbs and Stephen Gibbs; his sister, Harriet (Lester) Servid, and brother, William (Frances) Nelson; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
