Denny R. Forland Obituary
DENNY R. FORLAND Butte County Superior Court Judge Denny R. Forland, 60, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. Denny passed away on December 20, 2014 from complications of CLL and pneumonia. He was born on December 24, 1953, in Oakland, CA. His parents, Raymond T. and Sybil L. Forland preceded him in death. Denny attended elementary and high school in Oakland, CA. He attended Pacific Union College in Angwin, CA. Pepperdine University School of Law, in Malibu and McGeorge School of Law, in Sacramento, CA. Denny was admitted to the California Bar in 1978. His first job was at the California District Attorneys' Association in Sacramento doing legal research for prosecuting offices throughout the state. He actually had done research for Butte County District Attorneys' Office and that is what brought him here. Denny worked for the Butte County District Attorneys' Office from 1980 through 1984. That is where he met his wife Kim. Denny left the DA's office to join the Public Defender Law Offices of J. Joseph Vandervoort in Oroville, CA. He was a public defender from 1984-1986. At that time, he went into private practice with the law firm of Price, Price, Brown & Halsey, where he worked until 1991. Beginning February of 1991 and continuing through June of 2013, Denny practiced Private Criminal Defense Law, which included the Public Defender contract for Butte County. Denny was one of several Butte County attorneys who began the Public Defender Consortium in 1991. For eight of those 22 years Denny was the Executive Director of the Public Defender Consortium. For most of those 22 years Denny's wife, Kim, was his secretary. On May 19, 2013, Denny received "the call" from the Governor's Office. He had been appointed the next Butte County Superior Court Judge. Denny was sworn in on June 28, 2013. That was also the day that his wife, Kim "retired". It was his most proud moment along with his wedding day, and birth of his three children. Throughout his law career, Denny always found time to coach both of his boys in soccer and baseball and his daughter in softball. Although he did need to be reminded that girls are different than boys when it came to coaching. He loved playing golf and actually signed Kim up for lessons. If she liked it he would buy her clubs, if not, she never had to play again. They played together quite often. Denny played in a special golf tournament known as "The Road Kill". This tournament was always held in the Reno/Tahoe area. He always looked forward to this tournament and played in it for several years. Denny is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kim,; three children, Erik, 29, Taylor, 27 and Mackenzie, 22; brother Steve and wife Vicky of Cherry Valley, CA; sister Sandra, of Olympia, WA, in-laws, Bill and Gena Teer of Oroville, brother/sister- in-law, Marcus and Erin Teer, of Oroville and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held for Denny on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 2:00pm at The Lakeside Pavilion at California Park, 2565 California Park Drive, Chico, CA. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation in care of Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home.
