Donald Blakely Gruver Obituary
DONALD BLAKELY GRUVER Donald Blakely Gruver died on December 26, 2013, at the age 78. Don was born to John and Helen Gruver on April 19, 1935, in Washington D.C. He traveled to California by train in 1942, where he attended Francis Parker School, although he never attended college. Don was a humble man, rarely speaking about himself, and in many respects making him a "man of mystery." In his early years, he was a fan of cars and motorcycles. Don also served his country for several years in the United States Air Force. In his later years, he was an entrepreneur. During his life, he either operated or owned restaurants and bars, as well as working in the newspaper industry. In the late-1980's, he operated a small newspaper in Benson, Arizona. Later, after moving to Chico, he and his wife started a medical transcription service, which they ran for ten years. He retired thereafter. During the early part of his life, Don was married several times. Those relationships, as many do, did not last; however, out of one of them came his daughter, Mary, of whom he was very proud. In 1976, Don met Laura Shippen. They were married and remained close for 28 years, until she passed away in 2004. The following year, Don met Maxine Due. They married and remained close until his passing. Don is survived by his wife, Maxine, his daughter, Mary, his step-son, Aaron, his step-brother, James, and a granddaughter.
