Donna Jean Baird Obituary
DONA JEAN BAIRD Dona Jean Baird passed away peacefully on January 29, 2018 at Prestige Assisted Living in Chico, due to pneumonia complicated by Alzheimer's Disease. Dona was born on October 25, 1929 in Frankfort, South Dakota. She was the third of seven children, and the first daughter, born to Paul and Alice Baird. She grew up in Frankfort, a small farming community, and graduated from Frankfort High School as class valedictorian. She then attended and graduated from Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls. Dona served as a nurse in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Germany and Morocco, and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant. She then attended the University of Minnesota School of Nursing where she earned a baccalaureate degree in nursing with a specialty in pediatric nursing. Dona worked as a nursing supervisor at Children's Hospital in Omaha, an intensive care nurse at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, a public health nurse in the King County Health Department, Seattle, and finally as a public health nurse in the Butte County Health Department. During her service in this last position, Dona studied at U.C. Davis, graduating as a pediatric nurse practitioner. Throughout these years, Dona made and continued friendships from her school, work, and church. She enjoyed outdoor activities, especially canoeing, camping, hiking, and snow-skiing. She canoed the boundary waters of Northern Minnesota/ Ontario, Canada with her friend, Mary, with whom she also learned to ski. She enjoyed travel throughout much of the U.S. including Hawaii and Alaska, and spent three months exploring Europe with Mary. She made trips with other friends to Egypt, the Holy Lands, Mexico, Canada, and East Africa. She thoroughly enjoyed watching sports events on TV, especially football, and her favorite 49ers, with her friend, Nancy. She also enjoyed golfing. Dona was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she helped with their fund raising rummage sales and after-service coffee hours. She attended concerts of the North State Symphony and participated in Olli (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) classes for seniors. She was a generous supporter of numerous local charities. Dona felt close to her family. She is predeceased by her parents Paul & Alice Baird; brothers: Stanley and Berwyn (Bugs); and sister, Judy Hurst. She is survived by brother, John of Asheville, NC; sisters Jeanette Meile of Hartford, SD, and Paula Lorenz of State College, PA, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends who will miss her. Dona made a positive influence on the lives of many. Dona lived at Prestige Assisted Living these last two years, where she felt close to the staff, especially her friend, Dana, and where she was provided excellent care. Arrangements for burial are with Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home in Chico. Dona will be buried at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, Igo in Northern California. No service is planned.
