Dorothy (Kelly) Washington Obituary
DOROTHY (KELLY) WASHINGTON Dorothy Wadlington, born January 26, 1916 in Sacramento, CA, was the eldest child of Harry and Esther Wadlington. Within a year they moved to Chico where she spent the rest of her 98 years. She had two brothers, Don and Joe Wadlington who predeceased her. They spent their summers camping with their mother in Chico Meadows (now Butte Meadows) to escape the heat, and their dad would come up on Friday evenings after the work week. Their stories are the stuff of legends and certainly "the good old days". Dorothy was the model of "Old Chico" having lived in almost every neighborhood in town. She attended Chico schools that are no longer on the map, finally graduating from Chico High. She was a member of Job's Daughters and presided as Honored Queen at one time. After high school, Dorothy worked at Oser's Department Store teaching knitting. In 1939 she married Tom Kelly in what the ER described as "the nuptials of two prominent families". They raised their 3 children Mike, Candy and Joe in Chico. Dorothy was a life-long member of the Beta Chapter of Omega Nu , serving for one year as Grand President for the state of California. She owned La Femme Dress Shop and was very active socially in Chico. She and Tom were early members of Butte Creek Country Club and played golf regularly. She shot an Eagle on # 9 when there were no "women's tees", quite a feat even today when there are now "forward tees." She was also a regular and avid bridge player. In 1972, Tom died and after several years, Dorothy married George Washington. They were married for 7 years when George passed away. Dorothy served on the boards of both BCCC and the Enloe Foundation. Dorothy is survived by sons Mike (Kathy) and Joe (Barbara)Kelly, daughter Candyce (Barney) Griswold, and step-son Ernie (Karen) Washington , all of whom live in Chico. She has 8 grandchildren: Matt and Joel (Jessica)Kelly , Ryan and Erin Kelly, Andrea (Larry Graham)Griswold and Jason Griswold, Peter (Evilani) Washington and Kate (Brad Buchanan) Washington. She was "GG" (great grandmother) to 5: Mia and Mitch Kelly and Kendall, Lauren and Mallory Graham. Dorothy will be remembered by anyone who knew her for her sharp wit, her savvy bridge game, her love of the 49er's, prime rib, crossword puzzles, vodka, and most of all her family. She had a life well lived and she was a woman well loved. There will be a celebration of life at Butte Creek Country Club on the afternoon of April 13. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Enloe Foundation or Enloe Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of Brusie Funeral Home.
