EDWIN POWELL, PH.D.

Former Butte County resident, Edwin Cadmen Powell Ph.D., 66 y.o., of Ames, Iowa, passed away at Israel Family Hospice House, January 4, 2008.

Visitation was held Tuesday, January 8th. This was followed by a Celebration of Life Memorial Service. Family and friends were invited to share a meal and further joyful memories of Edwin at Izaac Walton League club house following the services which were held at Adams Funeral Home.

Edwin was born April 11, 1941, to Walton and Earline Powell in Yuba City, CA. He graduated from Chico High School in 1959 and then attended Chico State University. He received a B.S. in Biology, 1963. Edwin continued his education by earning a Masters in Biology at Florida State University in 1966 and then attended Tulane University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Cellular Biology.

Edwin met his beloved wife, Joyce Hicks, while attending Chico State University. They wed on June 11, 1963 in Biggs, California and began a 44 year life adventure together. In 1969, the couple moved to Ames, Iowa, which has been their home ever since. Edwin began a career in teaching and researching at Iowa State University, Dept. of Zoology. There he impacted an innumerable amount of students' lives through his love for mentoring and education. Edwin retired from ISU in June of 2006.

Edwin was a man of much diversification. He loved nature and, as such, much of his extracurricular activities evolved from his need to breathe fresh air. Fly fishing was his first and dearest love. His mission was always to catch the "Big One." He and other family members, Walton, Press, John, & Eugene have been well known for the Powell Fly Rod Co. for many years. This company was originally founded by his grandfather, E.C. Powell.

Hunting and working his Brittanies was his other love. Walking the countless acres of fields just to see his dogs run was what definitely contributed to his "Clean Healthy" life style. He was also involved in a multitude of organizations that fostered his love of conservation of the environment and nature.

Edwin's lifetime commitment to citizenship has resulted in various awards and recognitions. These included, The Governor's Volunteer Award, 1989 and recently, in 2007, Edwin was honored by Story County's Pheasants Forever as well as ISU's Student Chapter by having a newly acquired plot of land named after him. The Edwin C. Powell Nature Preserve. This land will be used to grow Iowa's native prairie.

Edwin C. Powell is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joyce; his son, Eugene (Jody) Powell, of Oroville, CA; daughter, Celeste (Daryl) Miller M.D., of East Peoria, IL; daughter, Elaine Powell-Ascroft, of Portland, OR; brother, John (Lynn) Powell, of Chico, CA; sister, Nancy (Chuck) Mohr, of Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Charlotte Powell, of Wenatchee, WA; sister-in-law, Martha Powell, of Chico, CA; aunt, Beverly Philips, of Yuba City, CA; and grandchildren: Samantha, Sydney and Simone Powell, Willow Miller, Caleb Powell, and Edwin Ascroft.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents Walton and Earline Powell; and his brother Press Powell.
