Evelyn Slade Obituary
EVELYN SLADE 1929-2018 Evelyn Slade died on March 7, 2018 at Valley Heights Convalescent Hospital in Watsonville, CA following a stroke the week before. She was 89 years old and lived the longest part of her life in Orland, from 1977 to 2016. She is survived by her sisters Dot Johnston and Joanne Lynn; her sons Steve Slade and Greg Slade; by grandchildren Nora Slade, Rachel Slade, Andrea Slade, Callie Slade, Jessie Slade, Lee Caton, Cody Caton; and great-grandchildren Brynn Caton, Ty Caton, Sladyn Caton, and Cannan Caton. She was preceded in death by her daughter Brenda Caton. Evelyn was born in South Norfolk, Virginia and moved to the country when she was 12. Her future husband's family farmed the land next door. She married Lester Slade in 1946 and had her son Steve in 1950 and daughter Brenda in 1953. The family moved to England for 15 months in 1958-59, a time Evelyn called the most exciting in her life. The family settled in Modesto and Escalon in the sixties and Evelyn's third child, Greg, was born. They lived in Southern California for five years before buying a ranch and starting a dairy in Orland. After her husband died in 1990, Evelyn moved into the Black Butte Mobile Home Park, where she lived for 27 years, the longest she was ever in one place. After her children were grown, Evelyn co-owned the Needle Nook in Orland and worked at Hart's Fabric and Honey Run until she was 81 years old. She was active in the "quilting ladies" and made over the years dozens of quilts that the family cherishes. A memorial will be at F.D. Sweet and Son, 825 A Street, Orland, on Wednesday March 14, 2018 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you bring pictures, stories and quilts to remember Evelyn's life.
