GARY LEE RIGGS EARL Obituary
GARY LEE RIGGS EARL

Gary Lee Riggs Earl died on April 8, 2012. He had watched The Masters and was with his family enjoying Easter Sunday fun with grandson Josh. An overall great day and suddenly he slipped away.

He was born on January 18, 1945, in Maywood, CA, to Glen J. and Leona Frances (Dill) Earl, and has a sister, Candace, of Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

Gary grew up in the Los Angeles area, but spent most of his youth in Ontario, CA, where he was a talented baseball player and lover of mischief. He graduated from Chaffey High School in 1962. During high school he met Janet Sue Francis (he later confessed to Janet that he'd fallen in love with her the first time he saw her). Gary attended Chico State and graduated with a BS in marketing.

After graduating, Gary and Janet returned to Southern California, settling in Cucamonga. They were married on February 3, 1968. Their greatest accomplishment is their son, Geoff of Portland; daughter, Wendy; son-in-law, Craig Bentley, and very special grandson, Joshua, all of Chico.

In 1976, Gary's dream of raising his family in Chico was realized. On January 1st, Janet, Geoff and Wendy joined Gary in their new hometown, where they continued to live for the next 36 years.

Gary's lifelong passion was baseball. He was a Little League coach, and was president of Chico Westside Little League for two years. During those years, he and his friends' tireless work resulted in the construction of a new field, and many other improvements. He loved to hunt with friends and served as president of the California Waterfowl Association. He relished rooting for the Dodgers in Giants territory. He played softball, as well as 3-on-3 basketball, racquetball and golf, for as long as his knees and heart would comply.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to the Gary Earl Fund, to benefit Chico Area Little League at STAR Community Credit Union, in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Services for Gary will be held Friday, April 13, 2012 at noon. Please call the funeral home for further information.
