Grace Estelle Edgar Obituary
GRACE ESTELLE EDGAR Grace Estelle Edgar, 91, passed away surrounded by family in her home at West Haven in Orland on Sunday, March 4. She was born to Harold and Grace Griffin on December 30, 1926, in Hawthorne, California. The youngest of five children, Estelle grew up in a loving, musical family. Her favorite instrument was the piano, which she played beautifully by ear throughout her life. Estelle sang in a trio with her sisters and was a song leader in high school. In college, Estelle sang with an A Capella choir and during WWII, they toured the west coast, singing for Army and Navy military bases and hospitals. Estelle met her lifetime companion, Joseph Edgar, while in grade school in Hawthorne. In fact, they used to sing together! Joe moved north to Orland when he was 14, but he never forgot Estelle. He returned later to court her and they were married in 1947. They continued to sing duets together for the rest of their lives. While Estelle worked in banks for many years to help support her family, she also found time to serve her community. She played piano and sang for weddings, funerals, and many community events, as well as participating in the Chico Sweet Adelines and the Glenn Chorale. She was active in her church by singing in the choir, working on committees, and leading youth groups. For 10 years, she made monthly visits to West Haven in Orland and Oakmont in Chico to sing and play the piano for the residents. She saw her musical talents as a gift from God which she used to serve him. Estelle was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, and two daughters, Linda Burge and Wendy Gustamante. She is survived by two children: daughter Jennifer Aguiar (Jerry) and son Charles Edgar (Cathy); 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Visitation at F.D. Sweet & Son Mortuary will be Tuesday, March 13, from 3:00-7:00 PM. A celebration of Estelle's life will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 14, at the Federated Church in Orland. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, or the Federated Church in Orland.
