1912 - 2011 Obituary Condolences

Nov. 11, 1912 - Sept. 8, 2011

We would like to celebrate the life of our mother, Helen Prudence Trana Offutt and announce her death on September 8, 2011 in Fremont.

Prudence was born in 1912 in Medford, OR to George Henry and Alvina Johanna Knauer Trana. She grew up in Oakland, graduated from Heald College, and then worked as an accountant for Par Soap and Investors Syndicate. On February 4, 1941, she married John William Offutt, Jr. in Oakland. He died in 1983.

Upon her marriage, Prudence began her chosen career as a homemaker and succeeded admirably! She was home for her daughters every day after school, created family dinners every night, and almost everything she did was for the benefit of her family.

Prudence was a lifetime member of the PTA after having been president of local schools twice, a member of a gourmet cooking club, a docent at Bidwell Mansion in Chico, a member of the Republican Women, and a member of the PEO Sisterhood. After her daughters left home, she and her husband started to travel extensively, a love she continued alone after he died. Her great love of learning never left her.

Prudence is survived by her grateful daughters, Joanne Offutt Wiedman (Rick) of Bowie, MD and Mary Offutt Carash (Marvin) of Fremont; 4 grandchildren, James Wiedman (Tanya) of Bowie, MD, Mary Jo Wiedman Prescott of Seattle, WA, Valerie Carash Avendano (Bill) of Fremont, and David Carash of Fremont; and 3 great-grandchildren.

There will be no funeral, and Prudence will be buried in Chico next to her husband.

Fremont Chapel of the Roses, (510) 797-1900.
