Obituary Condolences

A celebration of the life of Homer Duerr will be held at 3:00 p.m., August 30, 2009, at the family home. He died Friday, August 22, 2009, of complications from a stroke.

Homer Leroy Duerr was born July 18, 1934 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Homer Otto Duerr and Mary Annis Koehler. The family later settled in Southern California where "Leroy" graduated from North Hollywood High School. He went into the Army and was stationed in Alaska as part of a Cold War security detail that monitored Russian civil and military radio activity.

After the service, Homer entered UCLA as a Slavic Languages/Business major. It was there he met and married Melinda Sherry, on August 1, 1959. With their university degrees in hand, they moved north to Chico where Homer found a teaching job at Chico Junior High. Eventually, he completed a Masters Degree in English at CSU, Chico and soon after joined the first faculty of the newly formed Butte College. He taught there until his retirement, a much valued member of the staff.

Homer leaves behind Melinda, his wife of 50 years; son, Daniel, and his children, Jennifer, Kayla and Jake; daughter, Deborah Pico (Jeff) and their son, Jagger; and son, David (Heidi) and their children, Samuel and Jorja. He is also survived by his brother, Roger (Peggy), and their children, Brad, Brian, Brett and Ashley, and his sister, Jeanne, and her sons, Jessie Hillman and Jarrett Duerr.

"There'll be beer, wine, gin and cake at Homer Duerr's wake,

But not much cake..."
