James Russell Knowles Obituary
JAMES RUSSELL

KNOWLES

The family of James Russell Knowles would like to let friends, acquaintances and all those to whom Russ extended his hand, know that he passed in his home in Willows on Thursday, July 23, 2009.

He is survived by Loie, his loving wife of 60 years; brother, Clark; five children, (Mark, Carol, Lorri, Jill, and Michael); 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, he was also an avid tennis player, diligent tax accountant, and an asset to the Willows community. He will be greatly missed by everyone.

James Russell Knowles was born in Willows on May 14, 1925 to William and Mildred Knowles, and was raised in Willows along with his four brothers. He attended UC Berkeley where he played for the Cal band and met Loie, the love of his life. They were married in Pasadena and returned to Willows where he gave divine care of her until his last breath.

Russell practiced accounting with his father. He kept the books as well as prepared tax statements for some of his customers in the Sacramento Valley for over 59 years.

Tennis was the second love of Russell's life. He was a member of the Valley Oak Racket Club in Red Bluff for the last ten years, where he was a top notch player and played in the Mt. Shasta tournaments every year, including the tournament last August.

A contributor to the Willows community, Russell was elected to the city council and served one term as mayor. An active member of the Kiwanas Club, he joined in 1954 and served on the board for many years. Russell was also a member of the Willows Episcopal Church and served as warden and treasurer as well as on the vestry for many years.

Russ and Loie have always opened their arms to a great cast of characters and we would like this community of friends to share the beauty and richness of their love at his memorial service at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Willows on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. Russell will be buried separately at the Willows Cemetery.
