JIMMIE MCMAHEN Jimmie McMahen, 90, of Chico died Monday July 28, 2014. He passed away peacefully at his daughter's home in Sacramento surrounded by his loving family. Jimmie was born February 1, 1924 in Texas to the late J.M. and Elsie Wooten McMahen. Upon graduation from high school, at the age of 18, he entered the United States Air Force and became a P-38 fighter pilot. Stationed at Chico Army Air Base in the summer of 1943, Jimmie met Virginia Jeffries the love of his life for over 70 years while attending a USO dance being held at Chico Memorial Hall. They were married February 14, 1944 in Salinas, California. Although he was a pilot and trusted by the United States Air Force to fly expensive machines, he was not yet, 21 and had to call his father for permission to marry. Jimmie served in the Air Force and active Air Force reserve where he retired at age 60 with the rank of Major. Past employment, includes Gerber Baby Food Company, The State of California, J.C. Penny, and as an insurance agent and broker for 25 years. He was a lifetime member of Chico Elks Lodge 423 where in 1974; he was privileged to be named Elk of the Year. In February 2014, his lodge again recognized him by celebrating with a dinner and "roast". Jimmie was twice past commander of American Legion post 17. Each Memorial Day he looked forward to taking part in celebrations at the local cemetery honoring our veterans. He was a member of the Chico Blood Bank and donated countless gallons of blood. Jimmie proudly served on the Butte County Grand Jury from 1994-1995. Jimmie's retirement years were spent serving on various committees, visiting the sick and disabled, and visiting coffee groups with his many friends. Jimmie, known for the sparkle in his eyes and quick wit, had a sense of humor unsurpassed by few. He had a warm and generous spirit, and lived an active life filled with family and friends. Jimmie is survived by his wife of 70 years, Virginia, son and daughter- in-law, Jimmie and Linda McMahen, daughter and son in-law, Jill and David Kaustinen, granddaughter and husband, Carey and Craig Eacker, granddaughter and husband Maryann and Craig Schlicht, and 7 great- grandchildren, David Brandon Forester (Waltz), Emilee, Ethan and Autumn Eacker, RippleLynn Forester, Luca and Lucie Schlicht. His brother Bill McMahen and his only grandson David Ryan Forester preceded Jimmie in death. The memorial service will be held at the Chico Elks Lodge August 7, 2014, at high noon. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Glen Oaks Memorial Park.
