John C. Wendel Obituary
JOHN C. WENDEL John C. Wendel passed away on August 9th, 2013 in Chico, CA. He was 91 years old. He was born September 1st, 1921 and was a life-long resident of the Yuba City-Marysville-Chico area. He was known for his friendly nature and a kind and generous heart; John had a wide circle of friends of all ages and walks of life who will miss him dearly. After graduating from Yuba City High School in 1940, he joined the Navy and served throughout WWII. He met his wife, Eva Mary Jensen at Mare Island during the war and married her in 1945. Eva died in 2011, with John at her side. After being honorably discharged, he worked with his father as a stone mason until he joined the Operating Engineers and worked construction jobs throughout California. Eva traveled with him and setup household wherever they went, in their mobile home. John enjoyed horticulture and grew prize-winning staghorn ferns, while Eva specialized in begonias and ran Wendel's Greenhouse in Chico. After retiring, John lived a richly fulfilling life gardening, turning wood, traveling, and most of all, fishing. He and Eva spent many summers at Hoods Port, Washington and Port Hardy, British Columbia, where they were part of a community of summer "nomads" who fished, gathered berries, clams and oysters. They remained friends with the people they met throughout their lives. A keen observer of the natural world and of people, John was a delightful storyteller. Beginning in a depression-era peach ranch near Yuba City, a long life in construction, agriculture, fishing, and hunting gave him a trove of colorful characters and incidents from which to draw stories he would deliver in distinctive cadences of hesitation and repetition, rich with descriptive detail that could keep a person amused for hours. He is survived by several nephews and nieces. A Vigil Service will be held Friday, August 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home, Chico. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, August 17th, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Divine Savior Catholic Church in Chico. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Butte Humane Society in care of Newton-Bracewell. To view or send condolences go online to nbcfh.com
