John Halsell McMillin IV Obituary
JOHN HALSELL MCMILLIN IV James 4:14 John passed into eternity on July 9, 2015 at the age of 94 from the effects of Alzheimer's Disease. He was born on August 7, 1920 in Celina, TN to Benton and Bonnie McMillin. In 1922 the family moved to Livingston, TN where John spent his boyhood. In 1938 he graduated from Livingston Academy and then went on to attend Transylvania College in Lexington, KY for one year. Due to the "hard times" of the 1930's, John had to leave his college education behind to find work. He went to Detroit, MI and took a job as a "drive-away" teamster hauling cars for Dodge and many other car manufacturers. He became dissatisfied with the teamsters union and returned to Livingston. Finding no work there, he "hitched" a ride to Nashville, TN and joined the Navy on June 4, 1940. John was a photographer in the Navy and was in Military Photo Reconnaissance from 1942 until his retirement in 1963. He moved up quickly in rank becoming the youngest Warrant Officer in the Navy in 1943 and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. After twenty three years serving his country he worked as a policeman in Coalinga, CA. In 1966 he moved to Reno, NV and took the position of "Head Jailer" for the Reno Police Department. John retired from that position in 1980 and moved to Kelly Ridge in Oroville, CA where he and his wife Kathy enjoyed boating, golfing, square dancing and traveling in their RV. In 2011 John's health began to decline and in 2013 he and his wife moved to Fresno, CA to be closer to family. John accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1981 and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oroville. He was a life member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Nevada, Washoe Lodge No. 035 and a life member of the Military Officers Association of America. John was predeceased by his father, mother, four sisters and one grandson. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kathy and four children from a previous marriage: John H. McMillin V of Lompoc, CA, Bonnie Villines of Kingsburg, CA, Paul McMillin of Ohio, and Kevin McMillin of Hot Springs Village, AK, nine grandchildren, ten great -grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. John's ashes will be interred in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery at Santa Nella, CA. Any remembrances can be made in John's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America: 322 Eighth Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001 or to any .
