John Keith Lonsdale Lt. Col. US Air (Retired) Force Obituary
JOHN KEITH LONSDALE, LT. COL. US AIR FORCE (RETIRED) John K Lonsdale was born on June 27, 1921 in Winnipeg, Canada. He passed away suddenly at the age of 92 on March 27, 2014 . A true American patriot, he faithfully served 28 years in the United States Army Air Corps and Air Force as a navigator. His storied career included combat missions during WW II and Korea. He was recognized for his decorated service and sacrifice to his country with numerous medals, most notably the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired from military service and moved his family to California in 1969. He worked for the County of Santa Cruz as an Administrative Services Officer, later retiring and moving to Oroville with his wife Arlene. John and Arlene met in Minneapolis, MN and were married on January 10, 1948. They celebrated 58 years together before Arlene's passing in 2006, including raising four loving children, sons John T., Dave, and Mark, and daughter Lisa (Haux). As the patriarch of the Lonsdale family his life's work was dedicated to spending time supporting and mentoring his four children, eight grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his brother Norman Gerald Lonsdale and his family of San Diego and multiple family members in Australia. Family vacations were spent traveling the country camping and summers on Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. He instilled in his children a love of the outdoors and sports, teaching all of them how to play tennis at an early age. Other than his family, John's hobbies included traveling the world and seeing every continent throughout his lifetime. His favorite mode of travel stateside was touring the country visiting family and friends in his RV. He was an avid fisherman and loved taking his beloved standard schnauzers to compete in dog shows. He enjoyed tennis with his many friends and rooting for the SF 49ers. After the passing of his wife, he was fortunate to find loving companionship with Oroville resident Patricia Fleming. John leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of dedication to country and family, and he will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. A memorial service is planned for Thursday, April 3rd at 10:30am at Scheer Memorial Chapel, 2410 Foothill Blvd in Oroville. Donations in John's name may be made to any charity serving the needs of veterans.
