Kevin Hanley Obituary
KEVIN HANLEY Kevin Eugene Hanley, a Renaissance man who loved life and family so dearly, passed away on his 59th birthday, July 1, 2015, at his home in Sacramento. Kevin was born in Lakawanna, N.Y., in 1956, and moved to California as a child. In 1974, he graduated from Buena High School in Ventura. At 18, he studied in South Africa for a year. On July 7, 1979, Kevin married the love of his life, Christine Simpson, and the couple had three children, Erin, Colin and Dylan, while living in Humboldt County. In 1990, the family moved to Chico, where Kevin began his schooling again, receiving a BS in civil engineering and an MS in interdisciplinary studies, focusing on applied civil engineering. Kevin valued education and the idea that "today decides tomorrow." Kevin worked for Caltrans for 17 years, starting in highway design and ending as program manager for California's involvement in the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials. He believed passionately in his work, particularly in collab-orating with other state transportation depart-ments and the federal government to work toward a safe, modern and seamless national transportation system. He served on the professional advisory board of CSU Chico's Civil Engineering Depart-ment and on the Transportation Research Board's Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee. He had the deepest respect for his colleagues. Kevin will be remem-bered for his profound faith and sense of hope, his big laugh and an even bigger heart. He loved playing guitar, camping with lifelong friends, baking bread, writing and coaching baseball. More than that, he loved being a husband, father and grandfather. He instilled his values in his children, inspiring them to leave the world a better place. Kevin was a fighter to the end, passing away after an inspirational fight with cancer. A funeral service will be held July 11 at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, 3159 Land Park Drive, Sacramento.
