Lawrence Edward Whan Obituary
LAWRENCE EDWARD WHAN 3/15/1927 7/6/2018 Lawrence Edward Whan passed away peacefully surrounded by family at 91 years of age on July 6, 2018. Larry was born in Paynesville, Minnesota and at 9 months moved with his parents to McCloud, California. Growing up in McCloud gave Larry an early appreciation of fishing, hunting and camping. He was active in Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. When World War II broke out, the Forest Service depended on teenaged boys to fight fires, and at age 14, Larry became a member of a fire suppression crew. At 17 he joined the US Navy and served in the Pacific on the destroyer USS Ingraham (DD-694). After the war, Larry enrolled at Chico State where he met his wife, Jean. There he earned Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Biology and made his career as a teacher of biological sciences for 37 years, mostly at Chico Sr. High School. He was also night school supervisor at Butte College for 14 years. Every vacation, their VW bus was loaded up with family and the dog for camping excursions around the US and even a few times into Mexico and Canada. A man of several natural abilities, he built cabinets, canoes and made several room additions to the house. He enjoyed fishing, sailing, cooking, baking, and wildlife wood-carving. But golf was his real passion, and he regularly played Bidwell Golf Course since 1949. After retirement, Larry and Jean bought a pickup and a 5th wheel trailer and continued camping and traveling to square dance events. They also toured throughout Europe and Australia. He was an active member of Bidwell Presbyterian Church, and Sons in Retirement. Larry and Jean were married 68 years together. He is survived by his beloved wife, children, Craig, Steve, Carol and Eric, their spouses and eight grandchildren. To view obituary and to send condolences online, go to NewtonBracewell.com
