Louis Phillips Hine Obituary
LOUIS PHILLIPS HINE¸ JR. Feb. 12, 1927 - May 4, 2014 The children of Louis Phillips Hine, Jr. are sad to announce the death of their father in Chico on May 4th of natural causes. He was 87. Lou lived most of his early life in Short Hills, NJ. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy as a motor machinists mate. Upon return from the Pacific War, he entered Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. In 1949, he married Jean Graham of Erie, PA, and they together raised four children. Lou spent 30 years with Westinghouse, rising to senior executive status where his creative gifts and technical talent earned him 10 patents in heating and cooling technologies. The family lived in Buffalo, NY, Elyria, Ohio in the 1950s and 60s, moving to Pleasanton, CA in 1969. Lou and Jean loved Northern California and so, in 1989 after stops in Norman, Oklahoma and Minneapolis MN, they came back to Sacramento to enjoy retirement in California. In 2001 they moved to Paradise, CA. Lou spent the final year of his life in Chico. Lou loved to sail, and he and son Peter raced and cruised sailboats on Lake Erie, San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. He enjoyed woodworking, construction and figuring out what made things "tick". He designed and supervised the building of the family home in Ohio. Everyone who knew Lou said he had a wonderful, friendly and warm personality, and was a memorable presence wherever he was. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. If he liked you, he called you "Tiger." Lou was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jean. He is survived by his sons Peter (Stockton, CA), Jeffrey (Benicia,CA), Steven (Bartlesville,OK), and daughter Carol Masters (Chico, CA) and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 8th at 2pm at Newton-Bracewell in Chico. Interment next to his beloved Jean will be private.
