Luceen F. Schmelke passed away peacefully on June 23, 2011 in Oroville.

Born November 21, 1919 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. She was raised and attended schools in southeastern Nebraska, eventually attending Peru State Teachers College.

Luceen married Morris Beardsley in 1940, and moved to southern California to work in a defense plant during WWII.

In the 1950's she moved to San Jose, California, where she raised her family; her first husband died in the early 1960's.

Luceen married Jack Schmelke in 1964 and joined him in Smith River (Del Norte County). They resided there until Jack's retirement, moving to Oroville in 1978. Until Jack passed away in 2010, Luceen and Jack were married for 46 years.

Luceen was employed for most of her life; she worked for Douglas Aircraft, Union Oil, United Technologies, and finally with the State of California, Employee Development Department at the Oroville office.

Luceen's activities and interests included Beta Sigma Phi sorority (a member for over 50 years), a passion for bowling, gardening, music, and tracing her family roots. She thoroughly enjoyed her beautiful home and living in the foothills of Oroville for the past three decades.

She leaves sons Dennis (Stephanie), Darwin (Marilyn), and step-daughter Teresa (Tony). Others include four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Luceen's family is extremely grateful to Nicoleta Angheluta of Iris House in Oroville who provided loving and exceptional care for the past two years.
