1915 - 2012 Obituary Condolences

Lurena Whipple passed from this life on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 in Placerville.

She was born September 10, 1915 in Grand Prairie, Texas to Laura and Frank Clark. She was the seventh family child with 4 brothers and 2 sisters. On July 4, 1944, she married the love of her life, Frederick M. Whipple.

Lurena was a loving mother, wife and homemaker. During WWII, she served as a supervisor for the telephone company in the Bay area. As a career Army wife, Lurena provided for her family during numerous military assignments in both Europe and the United States. On retiring from the U.S. Army, Frederick and Lurena became members of the Cal State University/ Chico faculty community for many additional years. Lurena was always proud of her husband and sons, and their accomplishments, but we know in our hearts, that behind that successful man was a strong, intelligent, persevering wife and mother.

Lurena was an avid bridge player and world traveler. Lurena was also a foster mom to a giraffe at the Sacramento zoo. She enjoyed Sacramento Kings basketball, good music, good wine and good friends. Lurena loved her Lord and was an active member of Bidwell Presbyterian Church. She also gave her time in retirement to various charities and was a vibrant member of her retirement community in Chico, CA.

Lurena is survived by 2 sons, Daniel and his wife, Loretta of Albuquerque, NM, and James and his wife Deborah of Placerville, CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ashley, Diane, Kara, Natalie, Jarrell, Kirby and LTC Scott Vaughan of Springfield, VA. Her great-grandchildren, Violet, Jacob, Sophia, Lauren, Matthew and Rebecca also share in our family loss. Her great-great-grandchild, Jacob will surely miss her as well.

Lurena was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 58 years; 1 nephew; 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 27, 2012 at Glen Oaks Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, Lurena would ask that you make a donation to your local animal shelter.

Arrangements are under the direction of Brusie Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to the family on line at www.BrusieFH.com.
