MARY R. GRANNEMAN

Mary Riley Granneman passed away March 14, 2008, at Tobacco Root Mountains Care Center in Sheridan, Montana. She recently celebrated her 84th birthday there with family and friends.

Mary was born on January 20, 1924 in Butte, Montana to Mary (Mellott) and John Riley. She was raised on the family ranch in Waterloo, Montana. She graduated from Whitehall High School and Butte Business College.

Mary moved to Chico during World War II. In 1951, she married Vern Granneman of Meridian, California. Mary and Vern settled in Chico and raised two children, Vernon and Joanne.

Mary worked in accounting and bookkeeping for many small businesses in the Chico area. In the 1960's, she became a licensed nursing home administrator. She was the administrator of Riverside Convalescent Hospital and later Beverly Manor Convalescent Hospital (both located in Chico) for 27 years before her retirement. She was a long time and active member of the California Association of Health Facilities and received the Association's Ditinguished Service Award in 1986.

Mary was also very active in the community. She was a lifetime member and past president of the Chico Soroptimist Club. She also served on the Chico Branch of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish and later Our Divine Savior Parish and donated her time and talents to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

An avid gardener, Mary's yard was always a sea of color. She was particularly proud of her roses and fruit trees and her yard was the site of many parties for family, friends, the Soroptimist Club and the Nursing Home Association.

In recent years, Mary joined the "Red Hat Ladies," first in Chico and later in Sheridan, Montana. She made many friends and enjoyed Red Hat activities.

In March of 2005, Mary returned to Montana due to failing health and to be closer to her daughter, Joanne and her family. She resumed her gardening activities at the Care Center, keeping the front entrance awash in floral color all summer.

Mary will best be remembered as a devoted mom and friend and she will be dearly missed by all she touched in her full life.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Vern and her sister, Helen Cox of Dillon, Montana.

She is survived by her son, Vernon Granneman and wife, Mary of San Jose, California, and her daughter, Joanne and husband, Mike Galiger of Sheridan, Montana. She will also be missed by grandchildren, John Galiger, Dan Galiger (and wife Fran) of Sheridan, Jenny Galiger of Manhattan, Montana, and Kelly (Granneman) Pauley (and husband Layne) of Sacramento, Michael Granneman of San Jose, and great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Caitlyn, Michael, Colin and Layne.

A visitation and rosary will be held at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, 680 Camellia Way in Chico on Tuesday evening, March 18, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. A celebration of Mary's life and funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Our Divine Savior Roman Catholic Church, 566 E. Lassen Avenue in Chico.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Mary's memory to Notre Dame School, 435 Hazel Street, Chico, CA 95928 or in care of the funeral home. You may share your thoughts and memories of Mary online at nbcfh.com.
