Obituary Condolences


Mildred Annabelle Newland passed into the arms of her Lord on July 1, 2009. She passed quietly in her sleep at California Park Rehabilitation Hospital. Mildred was born on August 8, 1917 in Paris, Illinois to Ora and Grover Lance.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Clinton and Grover Jr., and her sisters, Lois and Annabelle. Mildred lived her young life in Paris, IL and moved to Springfield, IL as a young adult where she met and married the love of her life, Leland Newland, who preceded her in death in 1978.

She is survived by her children, Sandra (Cowan), married to Bob Cowan, of Chico and Larry Newland, married to Susie Newland, of Monroe, WA. and her granchildren, Laura (Pierson) and Kirsten (Cowan-McNeish) of Sacramento, Juli (Benjamin) of Monroe, WA and Cassi (Spigle) of Sterling, VA. She will also be missed by her five great-grandchildren, Elisabeth, Emily, Trevor, Carly, and Fia. All of her family will miss her loving ways and gentle humor. As a young wife Mildred was a loving and supportive mother throughout her children's lives. She was also a business partner with Lee as they owned and ran two funeral homes in Illinois. In 1966 they moved to California where they resided in Southern California for 10 years and eventually moved to Chico. Mildred loved sewing and quilting and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also loved to square dance and round dance, traveling to Europe with her dancing group on one occassion. She was an active member of and the secretary of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Chico for many years. Mildred will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched. Her graciousness and gentle ways were loved by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 from 5 until 8 p.m. in the Chapel of the Brusie Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at 1st Christian Church here in Chico.
