ORVILLE RYTHER A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Orville Ashton Ryther, 86 of Chico, on Monday, December 23, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 in Chico. Orville was born July 5, 1927 to Claude and Blanche Ryther in Lewiston, Idaho. He enlisted in the Navy and served during WWII. On June 1, 1952 he married Ann Scharff in Hailey, Idaho. In 1950 he became a teacher in Idaho. They moved to Chico in 1961. Orville's career included teaching mathematics and coaching varsity basketball at Chico High School. He was the first principal of Fairview High School and finished his career as assistant principal of curriculum at Chico Senior and Chico Junior High Schools. Orville enjoyed 24 years of retirement that included spending time with his grandchildren and playing golf with his wife, family and friends. His survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ann Ryther; eight children, Keith Ryther, Donna Hutchison, Nancy Young, Brian Ryther, Clark Ryther, John Ryther, Patti Haefner and Vicki Hightower; two sisters, Dorothy Ellis and Ruth Grubb; eleven grandchildren and three great -grand children. Visitation will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. Sunday evening with a Vigil service that will begin at 7 p.m. at the Brusie Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Fairview High School Orv Ryther Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
