Petra J. Schottman Obituary
PETRA J. SCHOTTMAN Petra Jane (Williams) Schottman went to be with the Lord on September 1st, 2014, at the age of 92. She was born in Bandon, Oregon on August 2, 1922. Growing up, the family also lived in Coos Bay, Redwood City and San Francisco. She joined the U.S. Navy Waves and was stationed on Treasure Island. After the war, she married a good friend of her brother Syd's, Edwin Arthur "Art" Schottman. As a young couple, they lived in Oakland, Sacramento and Fair Oaks. Along the way they had three children; Wesley, Eldon and Gwen. The family moved to Chico in 1964. Art was a traveling salesman and Petra took some retail jobs at Grants and "Monkey Wards." After a few years, while in her 40's, she decided to go back to school (she had gone to U. C. Berkeley and College of the Pacific previously). She got her teaching credential from Chico State. She worked for the Thermalito Unified School District for many years as a teacher, but mostly as a Special Project Director handling budgetary concerns. After Art passed away in 1983, she worked a few more years before retiring. She was then able to spend more time traveling (many times back to Bandon) and taking care of her grandchildren. Petra was an avid S. F. Giants fan, but at times was caught napping during televised games. "Just resting my eyes" she would say. She also loved reading, swimming and playing games. One recent highlight was a trip to Washington D.C. with her daughter to see the Women's Veteran's Memorial. Her family, her faith and her church family meant the world to her. She had a loving and generous heart and always tried to be positive and uplifting. And what a great sense of humor and wit! Petra stayed strong until the very end, finally tired and wanting to go to her eternal home. She was a very special lady. If you knew her, you loved her. She will be forever in our hearts. A special thank you to the staff of Courtyard at Little Chico Creek and Butte Home Health and Hospice for their care for mom in her last few years. She is predeceased by her husband, Edwin Arthur "Art" Schottman and her son Wesley P. Schottman. Her survivors include: her brother Sydney L. (Marguerite) Williams; son Eldon (Rose) Schottman; daughter Gwen (Andrew) Manz; daughter- in -law Alla Schottman; grandchildren Becky (Joe) Hejl; Glenn (Natalie) Schottman; Jamie (Jason) Walls; Nikita Schottman; six great -grandsons and many nieces and nephews and their families. She will be interred with her husband at a graveside service. A special "Celebration of Life" service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (2869 Cohasset Rd., Chico) on Monday, September 8th at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome. For donations in honor of Petra please make checks payable to Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.brusiefh.com
