Robert Jones Obituary
ROBERT JONES Robert Carl Jones, 82, of Corning, California, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2018, six months after his wife of 60 years, Ruth Delphia Jones, 79. They were both born in Corning, California; Bob on July 25, 1936, to Carl and Leona Jones and Ruth on July 21, 1938, to Henry and Mary Martin. Bob had one sister, Marie and Ruth had five brothers, Charles, Rob, Paul, Marion and Ralph. Both graduated from Corning High School, and Bob attended one year of college at UC Davis in Agriculture Studies. He returned home to farm and married the love of his life, Ruth. They married on June 29, 1957 at the First Baptist Church which they continued to attend for the rest of their lives along with a lot of their family and friends. They settled in the Squaw Hill area by the river where Ruth was raised and had attended a one-room schoolhouse before entering Corning High School. Their home was always open to family and friends for food, friendship and fun. They were born with an extraordinary work ethic and together they planted walnut and prune orchards and a vast garden. Ruth loved to can bread and butter pickles, dill pickles, tomatoes, peaches, applesauce and was renowned throughout the community for her German chocolate cake, peach and blackberry cobblers, divinity, fudge and her homemade Tutti-Frutti ice cream. While still in High School, Ruth was the National Grand Champion in 4H and won the option of a college scholarship or a houseful of appliances from Kelvinator, and of course, she chose the appliances so she could continue her passion. She won hundreds of first place ribbons throughout her younger school days. Ruth served as Wedding Hostess for many years at the church while Bob served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, member of various boards and sang in the choir. Both were leaders in the Baptist Youth Fellowship where they shared their love of the Lord with these young people, kept them entertained with so many fun outings and maintained lifelong friendships with them as they married and started their own families. Bob and Ruth opened their business, Robert C. Jones Insurance, in 1968 at 1414 Solano Street, where the business remains today. They served the community with integrity, honesty and friendship until their retirement when they sold the business to their son, John. Bob was awarded Businessman of the Year by the Tehama County Farm Bureau. He was recognized for his commitment to the community as a member and past president of the Rotary Club, a former member of the Corning Hospital board, a foreman of the county grand jury, service on the Tehama County Grievance Committee and other community activities. Bob was President of the board at Mid-Valley Bank, now Banner Bank, and he and Ruth gained many new friends through this relationship. It was also during this time that Bob took up golf. He shared many great times on the golf course with friends. Bob was also a proud Rotarian and has numerous awards for his service throughout the years. Bob took his Rotary membership as an honor and privilege, always planning vacations around meetings to continue his perfect attendance record. Ruth was the first to be awarded the Rotary Anne of the Year for her outstanding and unselfish service to the community and the club. They even hosted a special luncheon at their country home for the District Governor and his wife. Bob and Ruth are survived by their children, Debbie (Stephen) Peterson and John (Lori) Jones; daughter-in-law, Jessica Jones. They were preceded in death by their son Matt. They loved their grandchildren Heather, Dustin, Andrew, Hillary, Seth, Will, Dusti, Jennifer and Quincy; and adored their great-grandchildren Cali, Sadie, Lexi, Jase, Max, Levi, Leland, Layton and Kennedy. The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to Eugene Moffett, M.D. and Paramjit Singh, M.D. for their care throughout the years. To Butte Home Health and Hospice for their assistance and to Joel Hardin from Interm Health Care who provided the day to day care that allowed Dad and Mom to remain in their home. To our Dad and Mom, thanks for all the years you devoted to us and our growing families. It is now our turn to pass on to our families your legacy of how life should be lived. Thank you so much. A memorial and luncheon will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at the First Baptist Church in Corning, California. Bob and Ruth loved their God, family and community immensely. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the First Baptist Church, 506 Colusa Street, Corning, 96021 or the Corning Fire Department, 814 Fifth Street, Corning, 96021.
