Robert "Bob" Maddux Obituary

Robert "Bob" Maddux, 90, lovingly known as "Pa," spent his last days on earth happily surrounded by his wife, Anne; his children; grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; friends, and loving caregivers at Salem Hospital and Marion Estates. He passed peacefully during the night of March 3, 2011, after a sweet evening of sharing memories with family.

His life began on Sept. 15, 1920, in Hastings, Nebraska, as the third son of Seldon and Nanny (Lehman) Maddux. After serving as a Marine in WWII and helping to secure the island of Guam, he earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees at California State University at Chico, CA. From 1950 - 1979 he taught high school history and became a secondary school administrator. He was awarded the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation Award for Teachers. Upon retirement, he helped establish a Christian School through Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Chico. Bob and Anne moved to Oregon in 1986, where he enjoyed fishing, writing letters to the editor, teaching Sunday School, and spending time with family and friends. Bob had a deep faith and love of his Lord Jesus Christ. He was a member of Gideons. He was beloved for his corny jokes, and for telling stories, such as Cinderfella, to his grandkids.

Bob was preceded in death by son, Don; brothers, Don, Jerry, Dick and Sam, and sisters, Eleanor and Audrey.

He is survived and will be missed by Anne, his wife of 44 years; sister, Pat Davis of Sacramento; sons, Bob (Claudia) Maddux of San Diego, Dennis (Jana) Maddux of Citrus Heights, CA, and step-daughter, Jan (Lou) Black of Salem, OR; grandchildren, Jonathan (Marissa) Maddux, Rachel (Josh) Escalante, Jessica Maddux, Eric, Justin, and Ryan Maddux, Ken (Greta) Black, Chelene (Greg) Schafer, and Jody (John) White. Bob was blessed with twelve great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, March 7, 2011, at 1 p.m. in Cedar Hall at Salem Alliance Church, 555 Gaines St. NE, Salem OR.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Missionary Kids' Christmas Fund of Salem Alliance Church, a project Bob and Anne helped create.

Arrangements by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Home, 503-581-3911.
