1927 - 2012 Obituary Condolences

Robert "Bob" Cermak died peacefully at his home on April 4, 2012, after a short illness.

Bob was born April 13, 1927 in San Diego, CA to Frank and Ida Lee Cermak. At age 17, he enlisted in the Navy as a Fire Control Specialist. After his honorable discharge, Bob attended California State University at Berkeley, earning a Bachelors Degree in Forestry. In November 1951, Bob met his beloved Ethel, whom he married in August 1952. That same year, Bob began his Forest Service career. After a short tour in Washington state, Bob and his family cam to the Plumas National Forest in Challenge. Bob and Ethel spent the next eight years happily raising their four children. From there, Bob's Forest Service career took him throughout the United States to several National forests. Bob was proud to receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Agriculture in 1977 for his excellent leadership skills while in North Carolina. Bob returned to California as Deputy Regional Forester of Region Five and ultimately retired in 1982. He and Ethel built their dream home in the Oroville foothills, and Bob returned to school. He obtained his Master's Degree in History from Chico State University. Bob collaborated with colleagues as a fire control consultant and began writing in earnest. His book, "Fire in the Forest" was published in July 2005. Bob enjoyed his walks in the woods surrounding his home. He loved his wife, family, and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel; brother, Don; sister, Casey; children, Robert, Frank, Dan, and Judy; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
