ROY WALKER

Roy Samuel "Sam" Walker, 89, passed away peacefully at home in Chico on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, with his wife, Frances by his side.

He is survived by his son, Stephen and daughter-in-law, Aleesa; granddaughters, Allyson and Paige Walker of Livermore, CA and three sisters, Bea, Dorothy, and Bonnie and his wife, Frances. He was preceded in death by parents, John and Frances Walker; and two brothers, Paul and Harry.

Roy was born in Council Buffs, Iowa December 27, 1921, and grew up in Denver and Alma, Colorado. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on transport ships participating in the invasion of Kiska and the Attu Islands in Alaska, Kwajalein and Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands. In 1945, he was honorably discharged and married Rose Ella Berger December 31, 1945. He started Custom Upholstery Service in 1950 in Golden, Colorado and then in Castro Valley, California. In 1966, Roy with his son started Walker's Quarter Horses. He with his son bred and showed quality Quarter Horses that performed in halter, western pleasure, reining and working cow horse competition. He owned many champions in these events and was very proud of his horses and their accomplishments in the show ring. He worked for Castro Valley School District, teaching Upholstery from 1968 to 1989.

After his wife of 44 years passed away, he moved to Chico, California, where he lived for 20 years. Later, he remarried, Frances Krenek and remained actively involved in the community, organizing dances for the Grange Hall in Durham, and entertaining with vocal accompaniments or solos for many occasions. Roy was also a favorite to many dance partners on the ballroom dance floor.

Services will be held at Paradise Cemetery District, 980 Elliott Road, Paradise, CA, on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Following the services, a reception will be held at his home in Chico at 1713 Arbutus Street.
